Fans of RennSport rejoice! You may soon have another high-performance Audi option available at your local dealers. Spy photographers continue to capture evidence of a new super sporty sedan. Audi seems very eager to add a four-door M5-fighting machine to its lineup, meaning we will soon see the return of the RS6 sedan disguise super.

Spyshots of the upcoming four-door show that Audi is almost ready to bring back the RS6 sedan to the market. Recently, The Drive caught a prototype in action. The prototype sported familiar RS6 styling cues, from the quad wheels to the oval exhaust pipes.

It is indeed regrettable that Audi killed off the amazing RS7. The Performance version delivered incredible power and speed in an almost surprising manner. Hopefully, the new RS6 sedan can do the same.

There is no reason to doubt that this will not happen. After all, Audi continues to refine and enhance the RS6 Avant. The mega wagon remains a favorite among fans. Pressure from the current M5 Touring, the future Mercedes-AMG E63, and even the recently deceased Panamera Sport Turismo forces Audi to keep improving its supercars.

All the knowledge gathered means we should expect a sedan RS6 ready to fight for supremacy among high-performance executive shuttles. Rumors even mention horsepower figures above 700 horsepower.

What is the plan to develop that power? We suspect Audi will pair a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine with some electric assistance. If this means a hybrid RS6, so be it. In fact, it could be a way for Audi to meet fuel economy targets while delivering superb performance.

The added weight and complexity should not be too big of an issue. The RS6, in sedan or wagon form, has never been a light sports car. It is a luxury freight train capable of covering long distances in a short amount of time. And these cars do it with exceptional comfort. The potential PHEV RS6 does not change that mission. In fact, such a powertrain configuration is suitable for better city performance.

I just hope that the introduction of the RS6 sedan into the mix does not affect Audi’s decision to continue offering wagons in the United States. The BMW M5 Touring has proven to be a strong seller in this segment. Mercedes is still preparing the upcoming E63 successor. Porsche still offers a wagon version of the Taycan. Audi must continue to fight and keep hopes alive for all of us long roof lovers.
